Basmati Rice

  • 1 cup of Basmati Rice, *
  • 5-6 cups of water


  • Wash the Basmati Rice until the water runs clear. The first couple of times the water will run cloudy and will clear up the third or fourth time.
  • Use a deep pan with 5 to 6 cups of water.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of oil and ½ teaspoon of salt.
  • Add the washed Basmati Rice.
  • Bring the water to a boil; stir the rice and cook for 5-6 minutes.
  • Test a few rice grain to be sure it is cooked to your satisfaction.
  • Stir the water and when the rice is cooked for about 80% remove it from the stove.
  • Drain the water in a colander.
  • Basmati Rice is ready.



*Any variety of Basmati Rice. Basmati Rice and its varieties are popularly used in recipes of Pulav, Biriyani, Rice pilaf and often as a side dish for curries. In addition to the standard use, Basmati Rice can be used for Lemon Rice, Tomato Rice or any type of Fried Rice recipes.
