Broccoli and Carrot Thoran

  • 3 cups broccoli, chopped
  • 1 cup carrot, grated
  • ½ cup coconut, grated
  • 2 tbsp oil *
  • ½ tsp mustard seed
  • ¼ tsp cumin seed
  • ½ tbsp ginger, minced
  • 2 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 dry red chilies
  • 2 green chilies, minced
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 stalk curry leaves
  • ¼ tsp turmeric


  • In a pan, add oil.
  • When oil is hot, add mustard seeds.
  • When mustard seeds pop, add cumin seeds.
  • Slowly add ginger, garlic, dry red chilies, green chilies, curry leaves and onion.
  • Sauté for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  • When the onions are slightly brown, add the coconut.
  • Cook for a minute.
  • Add the broccoli and carrot - mix well.
  • Cover and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Remove lid and stir well.
  • Avoid overcooking in order to keep the broccoli and carrot crisp.



This dish goes well with rice, chapati, nan, etc.
*Any oil will do.
