  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1-1⁄2 cup water
  • 1⁄2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1⁄2 cup grated coconut
  • 2 tbsp. sugar *
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder *

  • Boil the water with salt and oil.
  • In a pan, lightly roast the flour on low heat for 4 to 5 minutes or until there is a light aroma.
  • Add the water to the roasted rice flour and combine well.
  • When still warm, knead well in order to form the dough.
  • Use a Sevai maker with the Idiyappam disc to create Idiyappams.
  • Use Idli trays or a steamer to cook the Idiyappams.
  • Cook for about 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Idiyappam is ready to serve. Enjoy!

  • Combine the grated coconut and the cardamom powder. You can put a teaspoon of the coconut mixture before or after ladling the Idiyappam onto the trays.

Sprinkling of sugar onto the Idiyappam makes it delicious as a breakfast, snack or meal. Idiyappam without sugar goes well with Egg Curry, Potato Curry, or Chicken Curry.
