Rice Porridge or Rice Gruel

  • 1 cup par boiled rice *
  • 5-6 cups of water
  • 1 teaspoon of salt to taste


  • Wash rice until water runs clear (about 2 to 3 times).
  • Boil water on stove top.
  • Add salt to water.
  • Add rice.
  • When it starts boiling, lower the flame to medium, stir well in between.
  • It takes about 40 minutes to cook.
  • You can test to see if the rice is ready by squeezing the rice grains. It is ready when soft.
  • Turn off heat and serve in a bowl.



This dish goes well with Kadala Curry, Green Payar Thoran, Chammandhi, Pappadam, and Pickle.
*This dish is a staple in South India- There are other kinds of rice you can use (such as Kerala Red Rice, Kuthari, and Kerala Matta Rice).
