Masala Chai

(Masala Tea)

  • 1-½ cup water
  • 1-½ cup milk
  • 3 cardamom, crushed
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 3 cloves
  • 4 black peppercorns
  • ½ inch piece of ginger, crushed*
  • 2 bags black tea (or 2 teaspoons of loose black tea leaves)


  • Crush the cardamom, cinnamon stick, cloves, ginger, and black peppercorns.
  • In a medium saucepan, bring water to a boil on medium heat.
  • Add the crushed spices to the water.
  • Boil for another 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Add the bags (or tea leaves) and boil for another 3 minutes.
  • Add the milk and bring it to a boil for another 3 minutes.
  • Serve with sugar or sweetener, if needed.



*If you wish to make a small batch of spices for future use, substitute dry ginger instead of fresh ginger. Don’t make more than a 10-day batch of spices. Store spice mix in an airtight container.
