Meen Thoran (Meen Peera)

Fish with grated coconut

Step 1:

  • 1 pound of Mathi (Sardines)
  • 1-½ cup coconut, grated
  • 5 green chilies
  • 1 pc kokum

Spices for Cooking (Step 2):

  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon fenugreek powder
  • 2 stalks of curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons ginger, minced
  • 2 tablespoons garlic, minced
  • 10 shallots, minced (if shallots are not available, use a small onion)
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or as needed
  • ½ cup water (if needed)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil


Step 1:

  • Wash and clean the Sardines in water with 1 piece of Kokum (Kudampuli)* soaked in water and 1 tablespoon of salt.
  • Discard the Kokum and drain the water.
  • Cut the fish into two or three pieces.
  • Take 3 pieces of Kokum and soak them in ¼ cup of water for 15 minutes to be used later.
  • Coarsely grind the grated coconut and the green chilies and set them aside in the cooking pot.**

Step 2:

  • Add the spices for cooking to the cooking pot, except for oil and water.
  • Mix well with hand or spoon.
  • Add the ¼ cup of kokum water and the kokum to the pot.
  • Add the ½ cup of water as well.
  • Add salt and mix well.
  • Add the fish to the mixture and mix well.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of oil to the top of the fish.
  • Cook on medium heat with the lid closed.
  • Stir in-between.
  • Taste for salt, add if needed.
  • Cook for about 10- 15 minutes.
  • Reduce heat to low once it begins to boil.
  • Remove the lid and cook for another few minutes or until most of the water is evaporated.
  • Stir well.
  • Add a tablespoon of oil on the top and a stalk of curry leaves.
  • Close the lid and cook for another 2 minutes.
  • Meen Thoran is ready to serve.



This dish goes well with Rice, Chapati, Nan, etc.
*You can substitute lemon juice for Kokum if Kokum is not readily available.
**Cooking this recipe in a “Chatti” (clay pot) is common in Kerala. If a Chatti is not available, use the available cooking pot.
