Parippu Vada

  • 1 cup Chana Dhal * (soaked in water for 2-4 hours)
  • 1⁄2 cup onions, minced
  • 1⁄2 tsp red chili flakes
  • 2 green chilis, minced
  • 2 stalks of curry leaves, minced
  • 2 tbsps ginger, minced
  • 1⁄2 tsp asafetida
  • 1⁄2 tsp fennel seed
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil, for frying


  • Wash and drain Chana Dhal.
  • Set aside 2 tablespoons of Chana Dhal.
  • Grind the rest to a coarse consistency - do not add water.
  • Add the remaining ingredients to the ground Chana Dhal, including the 2 tablespoons of Chana Dhal that was set aside.
  • Add salt for taste.
  • Make small balls of the Dhal mixture.
  • Wet your palm and press the small ball of Dhal mixture to form a small disc shape.
  • In a deep pan, add oil.
  • Once the oil is hot, turn the heat to medium and fry the Parippu Vadas, turning on to both sides to achieve a golden brown color.
  • Remove from oil on to a plate with a paper towel in order to absorb excess oil.
  • Parippu Vada is ready to serve. Enjoy!



This goes well as a snack with tea and bananas.
*You can substitute with Toor Dhal or Split Peas.
