Soya Chunks Roast

  • 2 cups Soya chunks
  • 4 tablespoon oil
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 1 green chili, slit in half
  • ¼ cup coconut slices
  • 2 medium onion, minced
  • 2 stalks curry leaves
  • 2 medium tomatoes, minced
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • 10 cups water to boil Soya chunks

Dry Spices:

  • 2 teaspoon salt, as needed
  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 teaspoon kashmiri chili Powder
  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • ½ teaspoon fennel seed powder
  • ¼ teaspoon asafetida


  • Add 1 teaspoon salt to water once it starts boiling.
  • Place the soy chunks in the boiling water.
  • Boil for about 5 minutes.
  • Remove from flame and drain the water.
  • Rinse with cold water a couple of times.
  • Squeeze the water out and set it aside.
  • In a pan, add oil. When the oil is hot, add ½ teaspoon cumin seeds and stir for 30 seconds.
  • Add ¼ cup coconut slices and let slightly brown.
  • Add the minced ginger and garlic and sauté for a minute.
  • Add the green chili and curry stalks, leave a few curry leaves for garnish.
  • Add the sliced onions and stir well.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of salt.
  • When the onions are slightly brown, turn the heat down.
  • Add in all the dry ingredients and stir well. Sauté for another minute.
  • Add the minced tomatoes.
  • Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  • Add ½ cup of boiling water.
  • Bring mixture to a boil.
  • Add the soy chunks and mix well.
  • Cook for another 5 minutes on medium flame, stirring in between.
  • Taste for salt and mix well.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Use curry leaves to garnish.
  • Soya Chunks Roast is ready to serve.



Soya Chunks Roast goes well with Rice, Appam, Naan, and Chapati.
*We used coconut oil, but any oil can be used.
