Tuna Thoran

Step 1:

  • 3 cans of Tuna (I used Albacore - you can use any label)*

Step 2:

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil **
  • ½ tsp mustard
  • ¼ tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1 tbsp. ginger, minced
  • 1 tbsp garlic, minced
  • 1 green chili, minced
  • 1 stalk curry leaves
  • 1 medium onion, minced
  • 1 medium tomato, minced
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp red chili flakes
  • ½ tsp fennel seeds powder
  • 1 cup coconut, grated
  • ¾ tsp salt


Step 1:

  • Wash the tuna.
  • Drain water and remove tuna (Will be 12 oz. after drained).
  • Set aside.

Step 2:

  • In a pan, when hot, add 2 tablespoons of oil.
  • When oil is hot, add mustard seeds.
  • When the mustard seeds start splattering, add fenugreek seeds.
  • Stir after adding in each ingredient.
  • Add ginger, garlic, green chili and curry leaves.
  • Sauté well - about a minute.
  • Add in onion and salt.
  • Stir well.
  • When onions are slightly brown, turn down heat and add turmeric, red chili flakes and fennel seed powder.
  • Cook for a minute.
  • Turn up the heat.
  • Add in tomatoes.
  • When the tomatoes are soft and mushy, add in the coconut.
  • Stir well for a minute.
  • Add tuna and mix well.
  • Close the pan with a lid and cook for about 3 minutes.
  • Mix in between.
  • Taste for salt
  • Tuna Thoran is ready to serve.



Tuna Thoran can be had with chapati, rice and even as a sandwich.
*I used Albacore, but you can use any label.
**Any oil will do - coconut oil provides its distinct taste.
