Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup roasted Rava (semolina)
  • 2 ½ tbsps oil or ghee *
  • ​½ tsp ​​mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dhal
  • 1 tsp chana dhal
  • 2 whole dried ​​red chilies
  • ​1 tbsp. ginger, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • ​2 green chilies, minced
  • 1 ​stalk of ​​​curry leaves **
  • ​2 tbsp. cashews **
  • ​2 tbsp coconut, grated**
  • 1 ½ cup of water
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • ¾ tsp salt, or as needed

Instructions
 

  • Roast Rava (semolina) in a pan on low to medium heat until roasted or until there is a light aroma. Set aside.
  • Boil water and milk together. Keep on low heat.
  • In a pan, add 2 1⁄2 tablespoons of oil or ghee.
  • When the oil is hot, add mustard seed.
  • Reduce heat to low.
  • When the mustard seeds pop, add urad dhal and chana dhal.
  • When they are slightly brown, add dry red chilies (broken in half).
  • Add cashews.
  • Add ginger and sauté for a minute, then add onion and salt, increase heat to medium and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Add green chilies and curry leaves.
  • Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Add grated coconut and mix well - cook for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Add the hot water and milk.
  • At the first boil, reduce heat and slowly add the roasted Rava (semolina).
  • Keep stirring so as to not create lumps.
  • Cook on low heat with the pan covered for 2 minutes.
  • Remove the lid. Stir well and add ½ teaspoon of sugar and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes while stirring.
  • Remove from heat and serve.
  • Uppumavu is ready to serve. Enjoy!

This is a stand-alone breakfast. Often served with Bananas, Egg Curry, etc.
*Use oil of your choice.
**Cashew, curry leaves, and grated coconut are optional.
